January is National Bath Safety Month! No matter what age you’re at, there are risks in the bathroom. Bathing is an activity built deep into our routines, and we often don’t think about the negative outcomes that could occur while in the bathroom. This is your reminder to take the proper precautions while in one of the most dangerous rooms in your house. Here are some things you can do to minimize the risk of injury while in the bathroom; for yourself, children, and seniors.
1. Do not leave children under the age of 6 alone in the bathtub, children should not be left alone in the bathroom while preparing for bath time or waiting for the tub to fill. Accidents occur in the blink of an eye.
2. Be aware of sharp edges in the bathroom; edges of the sink, sides of the bathtub.
3. Remember to wait until the tub has completed filling before placing a child or senior family member in, the temperature of the water will change as it fills.
4. Seniors suffer some of the worst falls in the bathroom. Med Supply carries shower chairs, transfer benches, and toilet safety frames. Click here to view our selection. Think about installing safety handles in the tub/shower or by the toilet to make things easier for your senior family members.
5. To avoid falls, place a no-slip rug or bathmat beside the bathtub. You can also place textured mats on the tub floor to keep your footing and avoid slipping on bubbles.
6. Did you know vision issues can increase risk of falls? Make sure you have enough lighting when in the bathroom. If your lighting is insufficient, try a lightbulb labeled “Bright White”, “Natural Light” or “Warm White”, for the appearance of natural lighting and reducing dimness in the bathroom.
