November is National Hospice & Palliative Care Month, a time for us to show awareness and appreciation for the millions of heroic home care aides, nurses, therapists, and social workers who play a crucial role in our health care system and in homes across the United States. These essential individuals make an incredible difference for the patients and families they work with.
“Home care and hospice nurses, therapists, aides, and other providers who choose to use their lives to serve our country’s aged, disabled, and dying. This noble work deserves our recognition and praise and we celebrate November as Home Care & Hospice Month for that very reason.”
– NAHC President William A. Dombi
What is hospice care?
“The definition of hospice care is compassionate comfort care (as opposed to curative care) for people facing a terminal illness with a prognosis of six months or less, based on their physician’s estimate if the disease runs its course as expected.” VITAS Healthcare
What is palliative care?
“The definition of palliative care is compassionate comfort care that provides relief from the symptoms and physical and mental stress of a serious or life-limiting illness. Palliative care can be pursued at diagnosis, during curative treatment and follow-up, and at the end of life.” VITAS Healthcare
