Parkinson’s Awareness Month is observed in April as a time to increase awareness about the disease and symptoms, along with supporting those afflicted. Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a slow advancing illness where the central nervous system degenerates and affects the motor system of the body. Motor symptoms typically affiliated with Parkinson’s include: trembling, stiffness, delayed muscle action, balance/movement difficulties and limb rigidity. These symptoms often occur slowly over time. Usually one side of the motor system is affected first, and as the disease progresses, both sides of the motor system are affected.
Each individual with Parkinson’s disease has a different reaction, and the aftereffect is frequently severe. Awareness, medications and information can help individuals with the condition, but at this time there is no cure, and additional research into PD is required. Usually symptoms are used to diagnose cases, with the most common complaint being issues with the bodies motor system. Roughly 10 million people globally suffer from Parkinson’s, including celebrities Ozzy Osbourne, Neil Diamond, Michael J. Fox and Muhammad Ali.
Though there is no cure, it is recommended that individuals with Parkinson’s exercise. Exercise can curb the symptoms of PD greatly, aerobic exercise helps to build new pathways within the brain to replace pathways which were damaged.
“When people with PD develop a shuffling gait or difficulty balancing, walkers or canes can provide added stability while walking.
The proper fit is important in selecting a walking aid, as the height needs to support a proper posture. Straight canes work better for people with PD than tripod or quad canes.
For walkers, four-wheeled walkers offer better stability for people with PD rather than those that need to be lifted. For people with late stage PD, a wheelchair or electric scooter might be needed to get around.” – ParkinsonsDisease.net
